LASIK
Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis or LASIK is the most modern and advanced refractive surgery without hospitalization; used for myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism (image distortion). This is nowadays the most common procedure. Its advantages are the reason why it is the most sought-after surgical procedure. It is absolutely harmless, visual recovery is practically immediate with minimal discomfort.
In a LASIK procedure, the ophthalmologist uses an instrument known as microkeratome along with the excimer laser to reform or redesign the curvature of the cornea (the transparent structure at the front of the eye), thus improving the way the eye focuses light inside the retina, giving as a result improved vision.
Next to other procedures, LASIK advantages are the security, precision and versatility to accomplish visual corrections.
With LASIK we reduce dependency on glasses or contacts.
LASIK takes place in an operating room, with the patient resting comfortable in the excimer laser's automatic seat. Topic anesthesia (eye drops) is provided for the procedure to take place.
A suction ring is placed to set the eye while the microkeratome -which performs a thin slash of the cornea, creating a flap- is activated. The microkeratome is carefully raised so the excimer laser is applied. Once the ablation is done, the corneal flap is placed back to its original position and the patient is ready to leave the operating room. After a short while in recovery, the patient is once again checked just before the patient checks out.
The special cares to be taken after surgery are easy to follow. These indications will be repeated to the patients before leaving the medical center, following this indications guarantee the total success of the surgery. Even though most of the time results and recovery are quick, it is necessary to wait at least for a week to evaluate LASIK results. As in any refractive surgery and depending on the visual disease it may be necessary to apply some final touches afterwards to obtain the best results.
