LASEK

Lasek is a technical variation of PRK and Lasik. It was developed to avoid complications while the flap in the cornea is being done and to diminish discomfort from PRK.

In Lasek, the corneal epithelium is removed so the excimer laser is applied directly on the corneal stroma. The effect of the laser is to polish a lens, modifying the cornea's curvature. Once the ablation is done, the corneal flap is replaced on the same epithelium.

This surgical procedure is used to correct refraction errors as myopia and astigmatism.

The patient suffers less discomfort because of the epithelium's protection, though he/she may experience irritation, the feeling of an outside object in the eye as well as star burs of halos during the first few days afterwards. The recovery after this procedure may take 3 to 7 days.

The post-surgery treatment is very important, so healing and vision recovery can be evaluated. In this treatment the patient must use eye-drops and sunglasses. It is also important to avoid situations in which the eye could get an infection or suffer traumatism, that's why we recommend some rest during the first days afterwards.
