Intracorneal Rings (Intacs)

Intracorneal rings are segments placed directly on the corneal stroma, this rings modify the corneal curvature. Today this procedure is used for keratoconus management before recurring to corneal transplant.

This procedure is done under topical anesthesia, doing a small cut in the cornea where a tunnel is dried to place the ring segment; this same process takes place for the other segment. Recovery is quick and does not require hospitalization.

The patient will experience vision improvement after the procedure. After a few days vision becomes stabilized. Post-surgery check-ups are very important, only this way we're able to evaluate healing and benefits of the procedure. It's important to realize that after a successful INTACS implant frame glasses or contacts may be needed to obtain good eyesight.

Not every patient suffering from keratoconus is a candidate for INTACS. Only after a detailed examination the ophthalmologist is able to determine if you are a candidate.
